This course focuses on 19th Century Drama. It introduces the dramatic diction, philosophy and ideology of this age through their writings. It covers the historical background of the era, general literary characteristics of the age, the rise of realism and naturalism in the theatre. It also covers the common dramatic techniques of the age. The students are used to have an idea about the topic, collect necessary information that are connected to the topic discussed. After explaining the topic, students of 3rd year are required to represent seminars from time to time to recall what information or concepts they have understood.
By the end of the course, the students are expected to:
- Develop important academic skills such as reading and analyzing a text.
- Analyze, synthesize, apply knowledge and develop an individual voice around topic
- Conduct surveys to gather opinions on certain topics and be able to report them.
- Deliver presentations regarding various topics
This course is devoted to 3rd year students in the Department of English who need to develop better literary comprehension as well as oral skills which they are expected to use in their future careers or academic work and analyzing the topics. It is a two-side course. The first is analyzing in which students are exposed to some language input along with literary discussions. The second is criticizing wherein students are supposed to practice giving some short time speeches as well as long time power point presentations. This course will definitely help students to build up a bank of vocabulary and ideas related to a variety of literary topics.
Activities are divided into different sections like summary, analysis, and criticism. Literary Language is presented through explicit instruction, and combined with oral or/and written exercises. Interpretation involves pre, during, and post activities, which are usually integrated with other skills. The book draws mainly on acts exploring a range of ideas. We encourage learners to become involved in discussion activities to discuss the topic, evaluate information from texts, and use effective strategies.
Different teaching methods and styles are used to achieve the above-mentioned objectives successfully. The basic method of teaching adopted to ensure the involvement of all the students in the learning process is student-centered classes. In the sense, the focus is on the students’ interests, abilities and learning styles. Furthermore, various modern teaching methods are used to improve the students’ oral skills from interactive exercises to multimedia resources. Students will be highly engaged in activities. Before each activity, prediction is set to direct students to an overall gist understanding of the content.
